Do Dermal Piercings Hurt? & Other Things You Should Know About Dermal Piercings

What to Know Before Getting a Dermal Piercing

Thinking about getting a dermal piercing? They're one of the most versatile body mods out there β€” no earlobe required, no fixed placement. But they're also one of the most misunderstood. Before you book in, here's everything you need to know.

What actually is a dermal piercing?

Unlike a standard piercing that goes in one side and out the other, a dermal (also called a single-point or microdermal piercing) sits flat against the skin with only the decorative top visible. A small anchor is inserted just beneath the surface of the skin, holding the jewellery in place.

Because there's no exit point, they can go almost anywhere β€” collarbones, cheekbones, the back of the neck, wrists, hips. The placement possibilities are basically endless, which is a big part of why they've stayed so popular.

Does it hurt?

Honestly? Less than you'd expect. Most people describe it as a sharp pinch rather than sustained pain β€” the whole procedure typically takes just a few minutes. That said, pain is personal and varies a lot depending on placement. Bony areas like the collarbone tend to be more sensitive than fleshier spots.

How much does a dermal piercing cost?

You're typically looking at Β£40–£100 depending on the studio, your location, and the jewellery you choose. London and other major cities tend to sit at the higher end. Always choose a reputable studio with an APP-certified (Association of Professional Piercers) or equivalent qualified piercer β€” this isn't the place to cut corners.

How long does healing take?

Dermals take longer to heal than most standard piercings β€” expect 1–3 months minimum, and often closer to 6 months for full healing.

During that time:

  • Clean twice daily with sterile saline solution (nothing else)

  • Avoid touching, rotating, or snagging the jewellery

  • Keep it dry when possible β€” cover it in the shower during early healing

  • Avoid swimming in pools, the sea, or hot tubs until fully healed

  • Don't apply makeup, fake tan, or skincare products directly over it

Will it scar?

If a dermal is removed cleanly by a professional, scarring is usually minimal β€” often just a small, faint mark. If it rejects or is removed badly (i.e. pulled out rather than properly extracted), scarring can be more noticeable. Another reason to go to a pro.

Can you change the top?

Yes β€” once fully healed, the decorative top can be swapped out without removing the anchor. This is one of the best things about dermals: you can go from a simple gem to something more statement-making depending on the occasion. Your piercer can do this for you if you're not confident changing it yourself.

Student discounts on piercing supplies & aftercare

Keeping your new piercing clean doesn't have to be expensive. Here's where to save:

  • Boots student discount β€” Pick up sterile saline solution and wound wash for aftercare. Students get 10% off with a valid Student Beans discount. That's a significant saving on anything you need for healing!

  • Astrid & Miyu student discount β€” If you're after quality replacement jewellery once you're healed, Astrid & Miyu offer 10% off for students.

Is a dermal right for you?

Dermals are a commitment. They can last years if looked after properly, but they're also more likely to reject than conventional piercings, and removal does leave a mark. If you're in a job or environment where visible piercings aren't welcome, it's worth thinking about placement carefully β€” unlike an earring, you can't just pop it out for the day.

That said, for the right person in the right spot, a dermal can look incredible. Do your research, find a reputable piercer, budget for proper aftercare, and take the healing process seriously. The results are worth it.
